This is what I do!
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted. To proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor ... to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion...
... to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
...They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.”
Isaiah 61 (NIV)
When meeting someone for the first time or getting better acquainted with someone, it doesn't take long for the conversation to go to the topic of "What do you do?" This question attempts to better understand who they are, what they are about, how they spend much of their time and energy, and perhaps what they are passionate about.
Jesus was no stranger to this kind of interaction with people he came in contact with. He can be found throughout Scripture describing who he was, and what he did. He said this to John the Baptizer's friends, and even once in his home synagogue in Nazareth. When he shared with people what he did he made it crystal clear, with no confusion or apology, no "part-time", no "learning" on the job, no "sometimes", and no equivocation!
And here's some GREAT NEWS for you today: Jesus hasn't changed his job description one iota! He is on the job and ready to comfort you in your broken-heartedness, to free you from the chains that enslave you, and to bring gladness to your despair. Re-read the words above, and invite him to do exactly what he said he does! He is the right person for the job and is ready to begin work right now!!! Really, healing is our inheritance as children of God!
PAUSE … Invite Him to be with you; let Him quiet you with His Love.
REFLECT… What is God saying to you? Even more important at this stage, just who is this God who wants to talk with you? What are your gut-level feelings about Him?
Healing, Freedom, Release, Comfort .... God's Job Description! BUT...
Which of the works outlined above means the MOST to you, and why?
RECEIVE … Maybe the Lord is inviting you to stop reading all of Comfort.Guide, and just read and reread the above soothing words over and over! THIS is the God we speak about in Comfort.Guide! You can feel safe with Him!
