Detaching from Emotional Pain
The following can be done at any time and in any place, with complete privacy - totally portable and free!
1) Keep your eyes open, scan the room and have a light on.
2) Stay in touch with the present
3) "Grounding" is active, used for crisis or to deal with flooding of negative emotions.
Different Types of Grounding
Mental ..... Describe your physical environment using all your senses, i.e. "The walls are beige, there are two other people in the room, carpet is brown, furniture is Early American, something good is cooking in the kitchen..."
Describe colors, shapes, numbers, temperature, textures, objects, sound, etc.
Play a "categories" game - name things such as types of pets, musicians, states that begin with the letter "A", cars, etc.
Physical ..... Run warm or cool water over your hands.
Stand in front of a fan and experience the air flowing over you.
Compare the feel of a smooth object, such as paper or a smooth pebble, with the feel of a textured surface, such as sand paper or a washcloth.
Soothing ..... Think of favorites: colors, animals, season holidays, food, time of day, movies.
Picture people you care about.
Remember words to an inspiring song, poem or quotation.
Say something such as "I am a good person just going through a hard time. I will get through this!"
