A Change of Plans
..... a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
“Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used for Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.
JOHN 2:1-11 (NIV)
QUESTIONS:
1) Was it the banquet manager who told Jesus the problem of no more wine? Who did?
2) How did Mary feel and think when she came to Jesus?
3) Did Jesus have any intention of performing a miracle when he first arrived? What might have moved him to make this situation right? Did He have to “re-write” His plans for His first miracle?
4) If Jesus Himself had to “re-write” His plan for His first miracle, how do we also have to “re-write” parts of our past, present and future?
5) Are there any areas of your life that you believe Jesus would have no interest in? Or, like at Cana, would Jesus be interested in every detail of your life? Would he be as willing to hear a cry for help from you as He was from Mary?
PAUSE: Quiet yourself in His love and invite Him to be with you.
REFLECT:
Rewrite … How is Jesus rewriting your mourning into joy by giving you His rewrite?
Revive … Consider how He would want to, and is, reviving a sense of hope for your future.
Redeem … Where is He working good in a situation in which you thought all was lost?
RECEIVE:
Choose to agree with Jesus about His perspective in every part of your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal this truth to you, and to help you make this new realization a way to see life in a new and hopeful way.
